When I think back to Devin and Alicia's wedding at Chateau Beau, I don't immediately think about the ceremony or the reception.

I think about a game of rock, paper, scissors.

Before the ceremony, the two of them shared a first touch. Standing back to back, they took a few moments to talk, laugh, and settle into the day together before everything officially began.

At some point, they decided to play rock, paper, scissors.

Back to back. No peeking. No way of knowing who had won. The second it was over, Devin wanted answers.

"What did you put?"

Alicia laughed.

"You'll have to wait and see."

It was such a small moment, but it perfectly captured the dynamic between them. Even with a wedding day unfolding around them, they were still finding ways to make each other laugh.

Having photographed their engagement session before the wedding, it felt familiar in the best way. The same playful energy that showed up during their engagement session was present throughout the wedding day, making it easy to see why they fit together so naturally.

Their ceremony blended both Buddhist and Christian elements in a way that felt deeply personal. There were moments of prayer, reflection, and chanting, along with traditions that honored their individual backgrounds while creating something uniquely theirs. Rather than feeling like separate pieces brought together, everything flowed naturally, reflecting the life they have already begun building as a blended family.

One of the things I love most about weddings is seeing how couples choose to tell their story through the day itself.

For Devin and Alicia, that story wasn't told through elaborate details or grand productions.

It was told through intention. Through the people surrounding them. Through traditions that mattered. Through moments that felt genuine.

As the day moved into the reception, there was one more surprise waiting.

At one point, Devin grabbed the microphone and performed a rap for Alicia.

The room immediately came alive.

Guests sang along, cheered him on, and became part of the performance. What could have felt like a spectacle instead felt incredibly personal because it came from a place of genuine love. You could see how much it meant to Alicia and how much support surrounded them both.

Those are often the moments that stay with me long after the wedding day is over.

Not because they're perfectly planned.

Looking back at Devin and Alicia's wedding, I keep returning to the same thought.

The ceremony honored where they came from.

The reception celebrated where they're going.

And somewhere in between, there was a game of rock, paper, scissors that perfectly summed up who they are together.
